Inlays and onlays are dental alternatives to having a cavity filled with traditional filling material. They are stronger than a traditional filling but they can also be used as an alternative to crowns. Also, there are more colors combinations available with inlays and onlays. Inlays bond with a cavity that is on the tip of a tooth. On the other hand, onlays can extend beyond the tip of the tooth and are generally used for larger cavities. Both the inlays and
the onlays consist of various materials such as porcelain, gold or a composite and typically greatly increase the strength of your tooth.
Most of the time, applying an inlay or an onlay requires two procedures. Your dentist will remove the decayed area of the tooth and make an impression to send to our dental lab on the first procedure. When the inlay or onlay is ready, you will return to your dentist to then fit and bond the inlay or onlay to your tooth.
